Here we are at the traditional half way mark of baseball season and there are a few surprises out there.

The Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies are about where everyone thought they’d be but Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Minnesota continue to befuddle the talking heads — Cleveland and Pittsburgh for their continued good play and Minnesota for their inexplicable bad play.

The Yanks and the BoSox will likely go right to the wire with the Rays playing the part of spoilers in the AL East.

In the AL Central, Cleveland and Detroit are in a dogfight with the Pale Hose from Chicago trailing by 5 games and the enigmatic Twins just 6 and a half games out.

The AL West appears to be a two team battle between the Rangers and the L.A. Angels.

The National League kingpins, the Fightin’ Phils, are drawing away from everyone even though their lead over Atlanta is only 3 and a half games.

Don’t be surprised if the Eastern Division also yields the NL wild card team in the Atlanta Braves.

The NL West will go to the wire with the Giants and the upstart Diamondbacks.

Colorado will probably make their trademark late season run to keep things interesting and maybe produce a three team race.

The NL Central looks wide open with Milwaukee, the Cards, the Pirates — yeah, I said Pirates — and possibly Cincinnati all having a crack at the title.

The Brewers look like the class of the division but are yet to play like it while the Cards are getting healthier.

The Pirates have hung around long enough now to believe they have a chance and that makes them dangerous and my Reds are “treading water,” to quote a certain toothpick toting manager.

Personally, if the Reds don’t shake things up in a big way [starting at the top] you can stick a fork in them.

The second half of the season looks quite entertaining from here.
