Next week Co-owners Darren Tockstein and Corey Bowman plan to re-open the popular restaurant that has been out of commission since Nov. 26, 2011 when a fire broke out in the building.
When former owner of Willy Jak’s, Becky LaGore, decided not to re-open the business, Tockstein and Bowman decided to purchase the business. The acquisition of the business became final Oct. 1, 2012.
After buying the restaurant, the new owners removed the old flooring and poured concrete. The old plaster was stripped and the brick walls were exposed.
According to Bowman, the bar, which was located in the back of the building, has been relocated along the north side of the building.
Tockstein explained the back area of the restaurant would have more tables and booths for dining and there will be two pool tables in that area as well. According to Tockstein, they have added more televisions to the walls. And, both mens and womens bathrooms have been totally remodled.
When it comes to the food, Tockstein said they would have the same menu as before and will have shrimp, burgers and wings. He says they will have steaks on the menu all the time for the evening meals.
Tockstein says the restaurant is a draw for the town and gives the local people another dining option. “The city is behind us,” he said.
Tockstein and Bowman had started a Fat Edd’s business page on Facebook about three weeks ago and already the page has over 1000 likes.
Located in the back of the restaurant will be a tribute to the late Robert LaGore, who along with Metropolis businessmen Charlie Eichorn, Monty Eichorn and Mike McKee purchased the building in the fall of 1992 from June and Robert Elliott and opened Fast Eddie’s Bon Air bar and grill. Later in 2001, LaGore changed the name to Willy Jak’s.
Tockstein and Bowman, both worked with LaGore for many years.
The building used to house Elliott’s Furniture, which was started by John Elliott as a small carpenter’s shop in 1870.
