Lane restrictions are now in place on the I-24 bridge over the Ohio River in both directions.
The Illinois Department of Transportation says one lane in each direction is closed.
Barriers will be added in early October to the work zone to restrict lane width to 12 feet for joint repair work, which should take about two months.
Once that work is done, the work zones will come down until spring, when this section of interstate will be repaved.
Message boards are already in place reminding drivers of the upcoming work.
IDOT reminds drivers to use caution in the area, where workers and equipment are close to traffic.
To avoid delays, local drivers can use the Brookport Bridge.
