Art married Merna Mae Henson on Dec. 10, 1949, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Henson of Brookport. They were happily married for 63 years.
Art has also been a Mason for 63 years in the Farmers Masonic Lodge 232 AF and AM. On May 25, 1953, Art received 3rd Degree Mason (Initiated, Passed and Raised).
He retired from Allied Chemical after working 27 and one-half years.
He enjoyed actively participating in a reenactment of the Battle of Bunker Hill, being outdoors especially sitting on his porch, walking, picking up pecans and feeding his squirrel buddy, Pete. Most of all, he enjoyed taking his grandchildren and great-grandchildren fishing.
Art received the Award of Silver Star on Jan. 14, 1944, for gallantry in action in Mignano, Italy. His heroic actions possibly saved vehicles and lives. He also received the Bronze Star during his military service in the Army.
Art was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Brookport for over 60 years.
Art is survived by his wife, Merna; three children, Henry Shepler and wife Chris of Brookport, Dr. Chris Shepler and wife Peggy of Irmo, S.C. and Marsha Krueger and husband John of Metropolis; eight grandchildren, David Shepler and wife Debra of Brookport, Caitlin Krueger, Lisa Murray and husband Chad and Jared Krueger and wife Amy, all of Metropolis, Rachel Seydlitz and husband John and Daniel Shepler and wife Christy, all of Irmo, Stephen Shepler and wife Ronda of Royse City, Texas and Paul Shepler and wife Lydia of Santa Maria, Calif., 10 great-grandchildren, Cody Harris and Anthony Gonzales, both of Brookport, Brandon Murphy and Hannah and Whalyn Krueger, all of Metropolis, Nicholas Shepler of Paducah, Will, Brook and Caleb Seydlitz, all of Irmo, and Brady Shepler of Santa Maria; two great-great-grandchildren, Camden and Harlen Harris of Brookport; three stepgrandchildren, Paula Basham and Bradley and Michael West, all of Metropolis; five sisters-in-law, Eulean Baker, Lenoris Russell and Alma Schneider, all of Metropolis, Ellen Orr of Louisville, Ky. and Lois Boyd of Carthage; one brother-in-law, Bud Henson and wife Margie of Yuma, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, great- and great-great-grandfather who never met a stranger. He had many friends and will be dearly missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Lula Jane Konkler Shepler; two sisters, Violet and Goldie; and five brothers, William, Harold “Bud,” Lester, Fred and Jim.
Masonic rites were conducted Saturday evening at Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis. Funeral service was held Sunday at First Baptist Church of Brookport with Pastor David Siere, Pastor Bob Craig and Dr. Chris Shepler officiating. Burial with military rites followed at Metropolis Memorial Gardens.
