Massac County’s boys golf team won its side of the Patriot Invitational held Saturday at Metropolis Country Club while the girls faltered a bit but still managed a second place finish behind Shawn Rennegarbe’s Nashville team.

The boys shot a fine 294 for a 13-stroke win over second place Hamilton County in the eight-team field. Nashville came in a distant third at 318.

Zach Burnham and Hamilton County’s Landon Vaughn finished with identical 69s to tie for overall medalist. In a one-hole playoff, Vaughn birdied the first hole while Burnham made par to take the individual honors.

For Massac, Brock Burnham fired a one-over 72. Jon Duley shot 75. Luke Wieneke shot 78 to round out the Patriot scorecard. All of Massac’s counting scores finished in the top 10 individually. Nick Hunerkoch and Kyler Owens also played for Massac shooting 85 and 91 respectively.

On the ladies’ side, Rennegarbe, who is widely regarded as the finest prep golfer in this end of the state, led her team to a 13-stroke win over Massac, and Eldorado in the 10-team field.
