Mr. Harris was born on June 12, 1925 in Massac County, the son of the late Hider A. and Mary E. Cochran Harris and had attained the age of 86 years. He married Shirley J. Fletcher in 1949 and had later divorced. Shirley passed away on Jan. 6, 1999. He married Mildred J. Riley Hines-Harris on Dec. 21, 1974, and she survives.
Delmer worked in construction for many years and was a member of the Laborers Union in Metropolis, as well as the Laborers Union in Evansville, Ind. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the American Legion in Metropolis. He enjoyed rabbit and coon hunting, fishing and loved to work and care for his yard.
In addition to his wife and companion, Mildred Harris of Joppa, he is survived by one son, Harry and wife Dee Harris of Joppa; his stepchildren, Wilma Russell of Eldorado, Milton Lee Hines Jr. of Buncombe, Phyllis Jaco and Beatrice and husband Jim Gordon, all of Metropolis, James Hines of Brookport, Wanda and husband Jack Wright and John Hines, all of Stonewood, W.Va., and Darell Hines of Vienna; one grandchild, Ora Oldham; two great-grandchildren, Trenton and Jalynn; 28 stepgrandchildren; 37 stepgreat-grandchildren; 17 stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and his beloved niece, Dorothy Hiatt.
In addition to his parents and first wife, Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his twin brother, Elmer G. Harris; a sister, Pauline Betts; three half sisters, Letha Schmidt, Nella Mae Snyder and Gladys Batos; and a half brother and sister-in-law, Alan and Lena Anderson, who acted as caregivers to Delmer as a child.
Funeral service was held Sunday at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna with Pastor Billy Joe Hiatt officiating. Interment followed at Oak Grove Cemetery in rural Joppa, where military rites were conducted by the Illinois Honor Guard and the American Legion Post 306.
