Dennis Peitzmeier, 79, of Metropolis, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2013 at Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis.

A graveside burial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at Oakwood Cemetery in Macomb, with Monsignor Richard Pricco officiating. Pallbearers will be Mr. Peitzmeier’s sons-in-law, Greg Montalvo and Michael Romano, both of Macomb, and John Lamb of Metropolis; and his grandsons, Zachary Bartz of Macomb, Tyler Romano of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Luke Manning of Charlottesville, Va. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Dean Hinners, Joel Jennings, Leonard Maggio, Dr. Stephen Miller, David Park and Mark Thompson.

Born June 11, 1934 in Gregory Landing, Mo. Mr. Peitzmeier lived in St. Patrick, Mo. during his early childhood then moved to Macomb in 1944. He graduated from Macomb Senior High School in 1953. Mr. Peitzmeier was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Metropolis. He worked at GTE as supervisor of the central office equipment area in 1981 at Metropolis until retiring in 1990. After retiring from GTE, he worked at Long Distance Management. He was active in helping organize a Junior Achievement program for students, as well as helping with the Science Club at Macomb High School while living in Macomb. He was an active member in the Metropolis Kiwanis until shortly before his death.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years; five daughters, Maria Montalvo of Macomb, Susan Romano and Karen Peitzmeier, all of Macomb, Julia Manning of Manassas, Va. and Angela Lamb of Metropolis; 11 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Smith of Macomb; two sisters-in-law, Anne Peitzmeier of Plainfield and JoAnne Peitzmeier of Evansville, Ind.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, August A. and Victoria Louise Peitzmeier; one stepgrandchild; and five brothers, Lawrence, Paul, Andrew, August and Alvin Peitzmeier.

A funeral mass was held a Monday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with Father Michael Christopher Mujule officiating.
