Doris M. Cox, 88, of Metropolis, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at her residence at Twin Oaks in Metropolis.

Mrs. Cox was a World War II Army veteran, a member of the American Legion and retired from the U.S. Department of Urban Housing and Development. She was of the Catholic faith, attending St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Metropolis.

Survivors include one sister, Mary Machat and husband John of Fort Meyer, Fla.; two nieces, Sheila Eckenberg of Metropolis and Vicki Lines of Washington; and three nephews, Kenny Herring and David Herring, both of Metropolis, and Gale Herring of DeBuque, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Olein Richardson Mersdorf; her husband, Ray Cox; one sister, Shirley A. Herring; one brother Robert Mersdorf; and one nephew, Phillip Lines.

A memorial service will be held in her honor at a later date.

Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home of Metropolis was in charge of the arrangements.
