Take a team that’s young, inexperienced, somewhat smallish, and not particularly fast, and you have a recipe for a long season.

If you heard the early fourth quarter score of 31-0 last Friday night from Murphysboro, you probably thought to yourself, “here we go again.”

In a game that quite possibly could have been won had things gone our way, the Patriots struck for four last quarter touchdowns and fell 10 points short of the Red Devils at 38-28.

Massac had the ball deep in Murphy territory on their first possession only to turn the ball over on a fumble.

Had the Pats been able to punch that first score in, who knows?

The game featured a couple of injuries, with both teams losing a key player, a few fireworks on the field, several turnovers, four or five on-side kicks and a plethora of penalty flags.
