Frances J. Griebel, 91, of Highland, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at Relais Bonne Eau in Edwardsville.

Frances was born on Sunday, July 9, 1922, in Metropolis, the daughter of William C .J. and Dora M. Niemeyer Bremer. On Sunday, June 27, 1943, she married Roy J. Griebel, who passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2000.

Frances was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ (UCC) in Highland, EvUCC Women’s Guild and Quilter’s of the EvUCC; and former member of Immanuel UCC in Hamel, UCC of Marine in Marine, Ill., Church of the Good Shephard UCC in Carbondale and St. John’s UCC in Mascoutah.

Frances was born in Massac County near Metropolis. She was a graduate of Metropolis High School in 1938 and later earned her bachelor degree at Carthage College. She taught home economics at Mascoutah and then Latin and English through 1963. She also was a substitute teacher.

Her husband was a teacher, coach and superintendent at Mascoutah School. Her husband graduated from United Church of Christ of seminary in 1963 and started his pastorate with the Church of the Good Shepherd UCC in Carbondale from 1963 until 1969; UCC of Marine from 1969 until 1983; and 1983 until his death, he served as interim and supply pastor for the Illinois South Conference of UCC, while living in Hamel.

Frances was the corresponding secretary for the Illinois South Conference Hunger/Food Action Committee, which was a sub-committee of the Mission & Ecumenism Team. She hand wrote thank-you notes to all contributors to their mission. She attended Illinois South Conference annual meetings. In 1993, she was awarded Honored Lay Woman from the Illinois South and was acknowledged at the General Synod of United Church of Christ in St. Louis, Mo. She was a delegate for the Illinois South Conference to the National United Church of Christ General Synod in 1995 and 1997 in Oakland, Calif. and Columbus, Ohio.

In 2001, following her husband’s death, she moved to Faith Countryside Homes Village in Highland. She was active in Illinois Association for Home and Community Education on the county and state levels. She enjoyed traveling, including going to Europe five times; and visiting family and friends. She attended concerts at The Muny, enjoyed playing games, working crossword puzzles and writing letters. She volunteered on Tuesday mornings at Hitz Home for many years. She loved to cook and entertain for family and friends.

Survivors include one daughter, Juanita A. Hunter of Lansing, Mich.; one son, Dr. Gerald W. Griebel and wife Marilyn of Rico, Colo.; six grandchildren, Theron R. Chaplin of Roseville, Mich., Chandra J. Simmons and husband Todd of Grayson, Ga., Chandra M. Harrison and husband Wayne of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Peter J. Griebel and fiancée Allison Green of Alma, Colo., Stefan K. Griebel and wife Sheryl of Boulder, Colo. and Colin S. Travis and companion Evelyn Alvarez of Tuscon, Ariz.; seven great-grandchildren, Ryan P. Harrison, Alexandra J. Simmons, Makenna B. Harrison, Sebastian R. Griebel, Eli S. Harrison, Seneca R. Griebel and Simone D. Griebel; two sisters-in-law, Ellen Ruth Bremer and Mary Bremer, both of Metropolis; one cousin, Marlys Bitzenberger of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Carl Julius Bremer; her mother, Dora M. Niemeyer Bremer; her husband, Rev. Roy J. Griebel, who died July 11, 2000; two sisters, Ruth Korte and Pauline Bremer; and two brothers, Virgil Bremer and Edgar Bremer.

Funeral service was held Sunday at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland with Rev. Christopher W. Hill, senior pastor, officiating. Interment followed at Immanuel UCC Cemetery in Hamel.

Memorials may be made to Evangelical United Church of Christ; Hospice of Southern Illinois; or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland was in charge of arrangements.
