Organizers are making final plans for this year’s St. Johns Lutheran Church, which will be held Thursday, July 24 on the church grounds at 5187 Old Marion Road, near Jefferson School in Metropolis.

Serving time begins at 5 p.m.

Hand-cranked ice cream, porkburgers, hamburgers, bratwurst, chicken salad and hot dogs prepared on the premises will be available, as well as a variety of other good foods, all at the price of a freewill donation.

Attendees are encouraged to visit the country store set up at the social.

Various craft items, baked goods, garden vegetables and fruits will be available for purchase.

This annual event is accomplished each year by the members and friends of St. John Lutheran Church.

It is also sponsored by the South Shawnee Chapter 30645 of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, who will provide matching funds again this year.

This year, 10 percent of the net proceeds, prior to the matching funds, will be allocated to the St. John Lutheran Church Youth Center Construction Fund.

The remaining proceeds, with the addition of any matching funds, will be equally divided among the five recipients who are experiencing severe medical issues and expenses associated with those issues.

The five recipients this year are Rodney Wood, 54, of Golconda; Milburn Robinson, 72, of Brookport; Ross Pennebaker, 7, of Kevil, Kentucky and Sandra Robbins, 50, and Michael Bremer, 49, both of Metropolis.

Pennebraker was recently dismissed from Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville and is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer.

Robbins has medical issues in her the family and unable to work at this time.

Robinson, who also has heart issues, was diagnosed in March with multiple myeloma cancer. He was a former barber in Brookport.

Bremer, a self-employed painter, has heart problems and unable to work, and Wood has medical issues.

“We are hoping for good weather and a great turnout because we have five individuals in need of our assistance,” explained Liz Logeman, spokesperson for the social.

Volunteers are needed to crank ice cream at 5 p.m. on July 17 and 22.
