Local food pantries shelves need to be stocked and ready to assist those families who do need food to eat — not only during the holiday season, but year-round.
That is why the Metropolis Planet is joining forces again this year with The Paducah Sun to sponsor the 21st annual Groceries for Good, which will be held at Massac County grocery stores this Saturday at Metropolis groceries stores from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Area residents will have an opportunity to help those who are in need and are hungry simply by buying groceries or donating money to Groceries for Good. Planet employees, along with members of local Girl Scouts and COPE, Faith Tabernacle and Guardian Family Services volunteers and community volunteers, will be at Big John and Save-A-Lot in Metropolis.
The Metropolis Planet and the Paducah Sun sponsor the event in an effort to collect grocery items for local food pantries.
The collected grocery items will be distributed to COPE and Faith Tabernacle food pantries and items will also be donated to Guardian Family Services domestic abuse shelter in Metropolis.
Individuals may shop for items on Saturday and donate non-perishable grocery or they have the option to donate money and the Girl Scout volunteers will purchase the needed items with the money.
Again this year, individuals who may be out of town or who are unable to get to the grocery store may send donations in advance of the event.
Checks may be made out to: Groceries for Good in care of The Metropolis Planet, P.O. Box 820, Metropolis, IL 62960.
