My mom had a saying that fit Massac County’s first quarter last Friday night in the Vienna regional finals. “The hurrieder I go, the behinder I git!”

After Dalton Mitchell hit the first bucket of the game against Harrisburg just seconds into the action, Massac seemed intent on putting the pedal to the metal and disrupting Harrisburg’s usual patient style.

But five minutes and 40 some-odd seconds later, the score stood at 9-2 Harrisburg before Ross Devers found the bucket for Massac’s second score.

That 9-4 deficit was as close as Massac would be for the rest of the night, and the final two minutes of the first quarter were to be a harbinger of things to come.
