The rain, rain, rain coming down, down, down — several times in mass quantities — from Friday night through late into Saturday night spelled out trouble for many areas of Massac County.
According to the National Weather Service out of Paducah, 9.57 inches of rain was reported at Round Knob at 10 p.m. Saturday.
Massac County Highway Engineer Joe Matesevac told the Massac County Commission that over the weekend there were multiple washouts throughout the county with the heavy rainfall that moved through the area.
According to Matesevac, some highway department employees were called out on Saturday evening to address a wash out on Quail Run Road and also to assist in setting out barricades on flooded roads.
Monday morning, employees were working to repair a culvert on Joppa Bypass. Other problem areas were on Old Marion Road, Strawberry Road, Massac Creek Road and Powers Church Road.
The heavy rain caused flooding in other areas. New Hope Baptist Church cancelled its annual live nativity Sunday at the Kent Korte residence near New Columbia. Also on Sunday, Metropolis First Baptist Church cancelled its services due to flooding-evoked issues.
