Helen Ebbert, 89, of Paducah, formerly of Cairo, died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011 at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah.

Born on May 10, 1922 in Cairo, Mrs. Ebbert was a cashier at the Piggly Wiggly Store in Cairo before her retirement. She was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Cairo and the Altar Guild of the church.

Survivors include five daughters, Delores Cromwell of Paducah, Donna Thompson of Riley, Ind., Denise Bauer of South Fulton, Tenn., Debbi Griffey of Joppa and Darlene DeJarnet of Cleveland, Tenn.; one son, Jim Ebbert of Herrin; one brother, Bob Dowd of Galesburg; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter J. and Rose Donovan Dowd; her husband, Warren Ebbert; three sisters, Martha Wathen, Rosemary Axelson and Mary Edwards; and one brother, Raymond Dowd.

The Holy Rosary was recited Monday evening at Barkett Chapel in Cairo. A funeral mass was held Tuesday at St. Patricks Catholic Church with Father John Agbasiere and Father Jerome Fortenberry as celebrants. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery in Villa Ridge.
