Herbert Yates, 86, of Metropolis, passed away at 3 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011 at Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis.

Mr. Yates was born on Nov. 4, 1924 to Lonie and Hester Yates. He met the only love of his life, Mary Cook, when Mary was 13, and they dated until they married on Dec. 31, 1945. Mr. Yates served his country in World War II and was a true hero. He was one of the first troops to land on Normandy Beach. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Metropolis and had retired from Rawhide in Elgin.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years Mary Cook Yates of Metropolis; one son, Gary Yates and wife Lin of Lake in the Hills; one daughter-in-law, Jan Yates of Kingston; four grandchildren, Tim Yates of Lake in the Hills, Michael Yates of Chicago, Jeremy Yates of Sycamore and Nicole Yates of Kingston; seven great-grandchildren, Alexis Yates of Lake in the Hills, Cassidy Klausen, Kendell Klausen, Kala Klausen and Camryan Klausen, all of Kingston, and Jacob and Owen David Yates, both of Sycamore; two brothers, Jack Yates and wife Connie of Metropolis and Jim Yates and wife Susan of St. George, Utah; one sister, Sharon Lang and husband Donnie of Metropolis; and several nieces, nephews and close friends.

Mr. Yates was preceded in death by his parents, Lonie and Hester Yates; one son, David Yates; two brothers, James “Toots” Mitchell and Murrell Mitchell; and one sister, Tula Yates Hendrix.

Funeral service was held Tuesday at Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis with Rev. Gary Motta officiating. Burial followed at Metropolis Memorial Gardens Cemetery with military rites conducted. Pallbearers were Timothy Yates, Michael Yates, Lonnie Lee Hendrix, Denny Carnes, James Mitchell and Jeremy Yates.
