Massac County’s stellar mid-distance runner Leilani Hill took third place in the state in the 800M run Saturday at O’Brien Stadium in Charleston on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

Karina Liz of Aurora Central Catholic and Zoe Mead of Princeton took first and second respectively in the 800M.

Hill, freshman Madeline Bruce of Marion and Mt. Carmel’s Tyra Buss represented southern Illinois in the Top 10 finishers in the 800M.

Lady Patriot Emily Hoard just missed getting on the board in the triple jump finishing 10th with a leap of 35’ 6 ½”.

Harrisburg pole vaulter Lindsey Murray took first with a jump of 13’4”.

Cahokia followed their overwhelming win in sectionals with a seven-point win over Normal’s University High, 61-54, in taking first place as a team.

In Class A competition, Carterville’s Maddie Meyer brought back four medals in a standout performance.

Massac County’s defending state champion high jumper Alex King enters this weekend’s competition at Charleston still nursing a foot injury.

King’s “plant” foot has been bothering him almost all spring, and King did just enough at sectional to qualify him for the state event. King, who has cleared 7’1”, cleared the qualifying height of 6’3” and will advance on to the state tournament.

Hunter Johnson of West Frankfort and Darryl Sullivan of Marion also will represent southern Illinois in the high jump.
