According to Honeywell Spokesman Peter Dalpe, Honeywell Metropolis Works Plant Manager Larry Smith sent a letter to employees July 9 updating employees about Wednesday's meeting with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

"As you know, NRC reconfirmed as a part of its license and performance review in May that we are operating Metropolis Works safely. Scheduled for discussion this week is a recent additional inspection related to our preparedness to respond to extreme natural disasters. The inspection was a part of a comprehensive evaluation that the NRC is doing will all nuclear facilities in the U.S.," wrote Smith.

Smith said NRC would share its findings from the additional inspection and identify any issues the plant should address prior to restarting operations. He went on to write the NRC will also respond to any questions Honeywell may have about the inspection.

"Our goal is to reach consensus as soon as possible with the NRC on what the next steps will be to restart the plant, although we should recognize that ironing out a final plan will likely require additional follow up. We will do our best to move as quickly through this process so we can provide all involved with a clear timeline on restart," said Smith.
