On Monday, Honeywell spokesman Peter Dalpe released to the media an update from Honeywell Metropolis Works Plant Manager Larry Smith, who addressed the plant's annual shutdown.

"The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission re-confirmed last month we are operating Metropolis Works safely as part of its license and performance review," Smith said. "Since my note last week, we have had follow-up conversations with the NRC about the findings of their recent additional inspection, which focused on our preparedness to respond to extreme natural disasters."

According to Smith, the inspection was part of a comprehensive evaluation NRC is doing with all nuclear facilities in the U.S.

"We expect to make a number of upgrades to Metropolis Works as a result of the NRC's findings, and are in the process of defining the scope and timing of the required projects," said Smith.

"We have been able to confirm that the NRC will visit us July 11 to discuss their findings in detail, and we expect to have more clarity on our path forward after in-person discussions with them," he continued. "We will keep you informed as we learn more. In the meantime, we have completed our maintenance activities as part of the shutdown and are preparing for restart after we reach resolution with the NRC."
