Receiving the award this year at the Metropolis Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet and meeting, held Oct. 23, was Dena Hopkins. In her honor, Metropolis Rotary Club will make a monetary contribution to the charity of Hopkins’ choice.
Hopkins is director of children and youth ministries at Metropolis’ First United Methodist Church (FUMC).
“Dena works with youth across denominations to understand the needs of the homeless, hungry and marginalized persons in our society,” explained FUMC pastor Jeff Bealmear.
Over the past several years, Hopkins has organized the youth of the community in helping with sandbagging during the Flood of 2011, cleaning up the yards and homes affected by the 2010 ice storm that hit the region, sending youth to Harrisburg in February immediately following the aftermath of the F4 tornado and organizing youth trips through the year to participate in bringing food and clothes to the homeless under bridges in Nashville, Tenn.
