Irene S. Sommer, 85, of Metropolis, died Thursday, June 5, 2014, at her home.

Mrs. Sommer started as a cook at Franklin Elementary School in Metropolis.

She then went on to become a nurse, where she worked at Lourdes hospital for many years, served on the Massac Memorial Hospital board and volunteered at St. Nicholas Clinic in Paducah.

She was also a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Massac County and coached a girl’s summer softball team.

Survivors include her children, Steve Sommer and wife Kathy of Grand Island, N.Y. and Deborah Sommer and John Sommer and wife Lisa, all of Metropolis; three grandchildren, Kristin Sommer and Will Sommer, both of Grand Island and Tyler Sommer of Metropolis; one sister, Mary Hempler of Cleveland, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Cora Parker Stewart; her husband, Don Sommer; two sisters; and six brothers.

Funeral service was held Saturday at Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis with Rev. Jackie Meadows and Rev. Jon Cockrel officiating. Burial followed at Macedonia Church Cemetery.
