By virtue of his winning the 2012-13 Illinois Class AA high jump title, doors opened this summer for Metropolis’ Alex King.

King jumped at Drake University in the USA Track & Field (USATF) Nationals against an open field featuring several collegiate jumpers.

King jumped 6’10 3/4” which placed him fourth, but was awarded sixth based on number of misses.

Jumpers from the University of Alabama and the University of Minnesota took the top two places and will represent the U.S. in the Pan-Am Games later this month in Medellin, Colombia.

King was named the alternate for the U.S.
