Fighting Illini junior and MCHS three time state champ Mason Jacobs is having another go at the U.S. Amateur Championship and so far so good. Jacobs was the overall medalist back on July 25th at Merrillville, Indiana’s Innsbrook Country Club with a one day 36 hole total of 135 [68/67] in a qualifying round for the USGA Amateur Championship which began Monday [8/22] in Wisconsin. Erin Hills Country Club and Blue Mound Golf and Country Club are the two venues for the 111th USGA Amateur. Thirty six holes of high pressure, high level golf with only about a fifteen minute break between rounds is something most of us can only imagine and Jacobs freely admitted how grueling it is. “Its difficult and it’s a long day. Your body gets tired and its easy to fall off in the second round but I’ve gotten somewhat used to it.” The Amateur features the best amateur golfers in the country and this year is no exception looking at the list of players. Jacobs began play Monday at Blue Mound. An aspiring professional golfer after college, Jacobs is well aware of the opportunity the Amateur affords. “It can open a lot of doors. You have a chance to qualify for the Masters and the U.S.Open.”
