James “Doug” Bates, 14, of Metropolis, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Bates was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church of Paducah, Metropolis Boy Scout Troup 101, Venture Crew 101 and Chess Club.

Survivors include his parents, Rick and Leslea Rutt Bates of Metropolis; five sisters, Kimberly Bates Hagan of Pittsburgh, Kan., Traci Bates of Elizabethtown and Jessica Lauby, Jennifer Lauby and Olivia Bates, all of Metropolis; his grandfather, Vincent Rutt of Dixon; seven nieces and nephews; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jack and Maxine Bates and Eva June Rutt.

Funeral service was held Tuesday at Broadway United Methodist Church in Paducah with Rev. Joe Beal officiating.

A private burial will be held at Lower Salem Cemetery in Massac County.
