Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis with Rev. Richard Dobbs officiating.
Burial will follow at Metropolis Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Nathan Harrell, Ryan Creson, Austin Casper, Mitchell Stegman, David Groh and Ryan Flannery. Honorary pallbearers will be Nelson Wagner, Dale Clayton, Bill Ed Souders, Charles Mackey, Joe Gregory and Jerry Latham.
James was a Korean War Army veteran, a retired mechanic from EEI and a member of the Oaks First Church of God. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, who will be dearly missed.
James is survived by his wife of 59 years, Maxine Kersey Stegman; one son, Galen Stegman and wife Nicole; three daughters, Beth Lovelace, Sharon Harrell and fiancée Tony Myers and Rhonda Casper and husband Mike, all of Metropolis. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Miranda Groh, Marissa Flannery, Mitchell Stegman, Ryan Creson, Megan Lovelace, Nathan Harrell and Austin Casper; and five great-grandchildren, Demi Groh, McKali Groh, Madison Flannery, Ella Harrell and Amelia Harrell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Alice Averitt Stegman; nine sisters; and one brother.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12 at the funeral home.
