Jerry Wayne Oliver, 76, of Metropolis, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at his home with his loving family and friends by his side.

Mr. Oliver was born on Oct. 1, 1937 and, on Oct. 28, 1956, he was united in marriage to Nancy Kathryn Walters. Jerry was a retired business owner and an avid golfer and bowler.

Jerry loved being around his family and friends and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy Oliver; three daughters, Kathy Rushing and husband Randy, Susan Flannery and husband Craig and Jamey Mitchell and husband Tim; seven grandchildren, Zachary Rushing, Amanda Holbrook and husband Daniel, Candace Armstrong and husband Blair, Ryan Flannery and wife Marissa, Carlin Flannery, Cody Mitchell and Laken Mitchell; four great-grandchildren, Wilke Armstrong, Logan Holbrook, Madison Flannery and Rylan Flannery, and soon-to-be Blakely Jayne Armstrong; one brother, Dan Oliver and wife Norma; one brother-in-law, James Walters Jr. and wife Virginia; his nieces and nephews, Kim Futrell and husband Greg, David Oliver, James Walters III and wife Lorie, Russ Walters and wife Yukako and Brett Walters and fiancé Sarah; and numerous cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Ruth Kotter Oliver; his in-laws, James Sr. and Irene Walters; and a stillborn brother, Robert Oliver.

Funeral service was held Sunday at First Christian Church in Metropolis with Rev. Louis W. Brinker officiating.

Burial followed at the IOOF Cemetery in Metropolis. Pallbearers were Zachary Rushing, Ryan Flannery, Cody Mitchell, Blair Armstrong, Daniel Holbrook, David Oliver and Drew Hille. Honorary pallbearers were Stewart “Mutt” McDearmon, James “Mitch” Mitchell, Kenny Laird, Joe Hobbs and J.B. Buchanan.

Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home of Metropolis was in charge of the arrangements.
