John Phillip Duncan, 62, of Massac County, died Thursday, April 18, 2013 at his home after a long battle with cancer.

Born Oct. 20, 1950 in Brownfield, Mr. Duncan was a Vietnam Veteran, having served two years with distinction in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division.

Mr. Duncan was a member of the Laborers Union, worked for Westvaco cutting pines for many years, and also cut timber with his father and brothers.

He worked building the Smithland Lock and Dam and later worked through the Corp of Engineers at the Brookport Lock and Dam 52 and then transferred to Smithland Lock and Dam, where he retired in 2010 after 25 years of service.

Mr. Duncan was a member of Mt. Sterling Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Brookport.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Susanna Barger Duncan; three daughters, Nikita Shoulta and husband Tony, Jody Werner and Lindsey Duncan and Josh Tirey, all of Massac County; one grandson, Blake Werner of Massac County; four granddaughters, Karsyn Shoulta, Madison Werner, Landree Shoulta and Lydia Tirey, all from Massac County; his mother, Mildred Duncan of Golconda; two brothers, Jonathan Duncan and wife Nikki and Larry Duncan and wife Patty; two sisters, Phyllis Nichols and Linda Curry; his in-laws, Donald and Bonnie Barger; and several nieces and nephews.

Phillip was preceded in death by his father, John Duncan; one son, Phillip Noel Duncan; one nephew, Josh Duncan; and one niece, Tricia Duncan.

Graveside service was held April 21 at Mt. Sterling Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Brookport with Bro. David LeNeave officiating.

Military rites were conducted by VFW Post 9227 and American Legion Post 719.
