Funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Glendale United Methodist Church with Pastor Mike Shearer officiating. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery with military graveside rites being conducted by Beggs-Gurley VFW Post 5222 and the Illinois National Guard Burial Honors detail.
Born May 20, 1918 in Simpson, Mr. Rushing was a graduate of Robbs High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 until his honorable discharge on Jan. 6, 1946.
He attained the rank of sergeant and was assigned to the 90th Bomb Group serving in the Pacific theater of operation during World War II.
He was a former member of Beggs-Gurley VFW Post 5222.
Mr. Rushing was a lifelong farmer. He served as a member of the Johnson County Farm Bureau Board for 46 years and the Johnson County Soil and Water Conversation District Board for 42 years. Mr. Rushing was among a group of cattlemen who was instrumental in promoting the Interstate Producers Livestock Association sale barn at Robbs.
Additionally, Mr. Rushing served as postmaster at Simpson Post Office for many years, prior to his retirement on June 29, 1985.
He was a 50-plus year member of Gurney Masonic Lodge 778 AF&AM at Simpson, where he served as the lodge secretary for 46 years.
Mr. Rushing was a member of Glendale United Methodist Church, where he had formerly served as a member of the church board.
Survivors include two sons, Ron Rushing and wife Helen of Shawneetown and Dan Rushing and wife Verna of Metropolis; one daughter, Ellen Broom and husband Bill of Simpson; eight grandchildren, Ronda Duckworth, Chandra Stanley, Paul Maynard, Chelli Hardison, Robert Maynard, Ryan Rushing, Kyle Broom and Ashley Broom; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Carrie Wise of the Glendale community; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary Harrison Rushing; his parents, Lewis and Eula Rushing; and four sisters, Helen Phelps, Mildred Palmer, Mary Gaynelle Scarborough and Faye Faulkner.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 16 from 5–8 p.m. at the church. Masonic rites will be accorded at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
