Area residents are invited to celebrate the wonders of the Elk & Bison Prairie (EBP) Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Golden Pond Visitor Center (GPVC) in Land Between the Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area.

Visitors can explore the beauty, wildlife and history of the EBP during its most active time of year, when the GPVC will host the free celebration.

The EBP’s Bugle Corps, Friends of LBL interpretive staff, local historians and Forest Service personnel will be on-hand to help individuals learn about the prairie and provide hands-on displays about the animals and plants living in the prairie.

There will be an ongoing historical hunting presentation.

Learn about the benefits of native prairie plants, and then buy plants at the native plant sale to begin a prairie garden.

Children will learn about the prairie through activities and crafts.

All visitors will learn about the animals that live in the prairie from the smallest reptiles to birds and mammals that call prairie habitat their home.

The Bugle Corps will offer van tours of the prairie on the half-hour; these tours will especially benefit motorcyclists.

A food vendor will be at GPVC serving barbecue and other items.

“Don’t miss this once-a-year opportunity to hear an elk bugle, learn how people used prairie plants and animals, and just enjoy a beautiful September day,” said Curtis Fowler, range technician at LBL.
