Well, this year may have been more like a rebuild than a reload after losing three talented seniors from last year’s team, but the results were just about the same — another regional championship, a second-place finish in sectionals along with another trip to Decatur for the state championship.
The end result this year wasn’t another state championship for the girls, but the Lady Patriots’ third-place finish in some tough weather conditions was hard earned and well deserved.
Nashville’s Lady Hornettes made school history bringing home their first championship trophy with a two-day team score of 664. Rochester claimed second place with a team score of 683. Massac County took third with a 688.
Individually (and take notice of this young lady), freshman Lauren Chappell of Charleston won the big prize with a two-day score of 141. Chappell followed her round of three under 68 with a one over par 73 on Saturday to win going away.
Nashville’s Shawn Rennegarbe had a disastrous final nine on Saturday to watch her chances at the individual crown slip away.
Massac’s lone senior, Ali Eickholz, was good enough in the two-day competition to come in in a tie for 10th place with a 161. Junior Paige Ellerbusch ended up in a logjam for the 14th best score recorded at Red Tail Run with a 165. Junior Brittany Reynolds carded a 177 for two days with sophomore Carlin Flannery signing for a 186.
Junior Addie Gray shot 188 for Massac and sophomores Jessica Coakley and Sydney Boyd split time with Coakley playing Friday and Boyd playing in Saturday’s final round and carding 95 and 112 respectively.
