Ho Hum, here we go again. The MCHS Lady Patriot golf team hit the ground running Monday by winning the Teutopolis Wooden Shoe Classic. The inaugural schoolgirl event routinely pits some of the best talent in the state against each other and Monday’s match was no different. Massac County and Champaign St.Thomas More each fired tournament leading scores of 340 to force a score card playoff. The playoff brings into play the score of each team’s fifth player [matches usually involve six players with the top four scores counting in the team competition] and that plays into Massac’s strength. Coach Kimberly Hille is pragmatic about her team’s talent. “We may not have a phenom like Shawn Rennegarbe [ Nashville super sophomore] but where we’re different from most schools our size is we have five or six girls that on a given day can give us a score to count. Some of the top schools around here have one or two really good golfers but then the talent level and the scores fall off quickly. We’re a little different as we go five or six players deep and when it happens that you have to rely on your fifth or six player, we’re usually in pretty good shape.” That certainly was the case Monday for the lady Patriots. St. Thomas More was last year’s class A state champion while Massac County took second. Sami Weber was low scorer for Massac with a round of 82 with Kirsten Faulkner and Elaney Sommer each carding rounds of 85. Laura Bremer came home with an 88 and Peyton Helm also broke 90 with an 89. Ali Eicholz shot 94 to complete Massac’s scoring. Top ten medals were awarded with Weber earning 5th place overall to lead Massac. Faulkner, Sommer and Bremer all medaled also with 7th, 8th and 10th place finishes respectively.
