Having played on their own court only once so far, the girls have compiled a tidy 9-4 record for the young season. Massac’s losses came at the hands of some powerful opponents in Carterville, Nashville and O’Fallon.
The girls got a bit of revenge last week, though, when they took down Carterville on their own, brand new court. After dropping a hard fought first set to the Lady Lions, the Lady Patriots drew a line in the sand and took the second set handily 25-17.
Setter Rachael Leek went to work with some of her favorite targets in the third set, handing out 11 assists to Emily Hoard, Laken Hoyer, Christina Whitthorne and Alexxus Thompson to dominate net play.
Outstanding defensive efforts from Jordan Willmes and Rachel Chapman combined with the determined play of the offense to avenge the previous loss to the always tough Lady Lions.
The road warriors return home this week with a match against Harrisburg on Thursday and will host the Massac County Superman Slam round robin tournament on Saturday. The “slam” will include teams from Centralia, Cobden, Eldorado, New Athens, Paducah Tilghman, Vienna and Webber Township. Saturday’s action will kick off at 9 a.m.
