The improvement is easy to see, but the disappointment is also likewise easy to see.

At the season’s beginning, first-year Joppa High School Lady Rangers softball coach Michelle Johnson was highly optimistic and she had reason to be, with enough players for a real team — that has changed somewhat — and enough players with some talent to be competitive.

After winning a game last week against Egyptian, 12-2 in five innings, with eight players — one girl had to leave due to an emergency — Johnson was looking forward to this week’s games against Century and Shawnee.

The Century game was Monday afternoon and the result was not what the Lady Rangers were looking for.

Century plated a couple of runs in their first at bat, tacked on three more in the third inning and blew the game open in the fifth with a five spot.
