The 2014 Massac Couny High School valedictorians and salutatorians
The 33rd annual commencement at Massac County High School (MCHS) was held Friday, May 16, with 146 seniors graduating.

The MCHS Patriot concert band performed Pomp and Circumstance.

David Hannan, MCHS band director, and Chris Hayden, MCHS choir director, led the band and concert choir in musical selections.

The ceremony was opened by Keith Jaco, senior class president, welcoming those in attendance, and Jason Hayes, MCHS principal, spoke and presented the class.

Valedictorians were Cameron Earl Koch and Jacob Thomas White. Salutatorians were Jodie Denise Jacobs and Courtney Nicole Nelson.

Koch is the son of Ronnie Koch and Melanie Koch. He was senior class vice president; captain of the football team; a member of the chemistry and math teams; on the Scholar Bowl team; and in the National Honor Society.

Cameron attended the 2013 Ole Miss Lott Leadership Institute Summer Leadership Program. He is also an Illinois State Scholar.

Cameron received an Academic Excellence Award from University of Mississippi; Academic Excellence Technology Scholarship from University of Mississippi; the Holmes Scholarship of the University of Mississippi; the Toyota-Haley Barbour Scholarship from the University of Mississippi; the Henry C. Brevard Engineering Scholarship from the University of Mississippi; and the University Of Mississippi Chancellor’s Leadership Class Scholarship.

Koch will attend the University of Mississippi where he will pursue an engineering degree, followed by a business law degree.

White is the son of Atlee and Elaine White. He is a on the math team, a member of the German Club; on the Scholar Bowl team, a member of the National Honor Society and is also an Illinois State Scholar.

White received an Academic Banquet Scholarship and the Presidential Scholarship from Wichita State University where he will attend and pursue a degree in aerospace engineering.

Nelson is the daughter of David and Carmen Nelson of Metropolis. While attending MCHS, Nelson was involved in the Student Council, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), National Honor Society, German Club, Math Club, FCA and Drama Club.

In addition to her involvement in these various academic clubs, Nelson was actively involved in the MCHS Athletics program. During her time at MCHS, Nelson played girls soccer and was a cheerleader.

Nelson is an Illinois State Scholar; received an Academic Scholarship from Lipscomb University and a Shawnee Community College Honors Escrow Scholarship. She will attend Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., majoring in theater and arts.

Jacobs is the daughter of Linda and Wayne McCollum of Metropolis and Jerry Jacobs of Brookport. While attending MCHS, Jacobs was a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Math Club, Art Club, Spanish Club and spent countless hours volunteering within the community and surrounding area.

In addition to her involvement in these various academic clubs, Jacobs was actively involved in the MCHS athletics program. During her time at MCHS, she played volleyball and soccer.

Jacobs is an Illinois State Scholar and received an Academic Banquet Scholarship. She plans to attend West Kentucky Community and Technical College, later transferring to Murray State University to major in nursing.

Honor graduates were: Dereck Wayne Randolph, son of Mike Randolph and Betty Randolph, SIU Carbondale; Ali Eickholz, daughter of Jeff and Laura Eickholz, University of Mississippi; Natalie Bailey, daughter of Sterling and Julie Bailey, West Kentucky Community and Technical College; Nathan Davis, son of Brad and Michelle Davis, University of Illinois, Champaign; and Hannah Weber, daughter of Jeffrey and Stephanie Weber, Murray State University.

Also: Mallory McGinnis, daughter of Warren and Wanda McGinnis, Shawnee Community College; Dalton Mitchell, son of Patrick and Marla Mitchell, Rend Lake College; Reed Scheve, son of Ted and Teyoni Scheve, University of Illinois, Champaign; Kayla Dunn, daughter of Danny Dunn and Misty Raney, University of Kentucky; Alyssa Logeman, daughter of Scott and Laura Logeman, Arizona State; and Courteney Green, daughter of Brian and Norma Green, West Kentucky Community Technical College.
