Charles Mackey’s full-time job is managing Linwood Motors’ Fast Track, but it’s his part-time passion that has him working on a much faster track - a track he says that has helped keep his life down a good path.

Mackey was born in Kansas City, Mo., but at the age of 4, he and his family moved to Paducah, where he was raised and lived until 1984 when he moved to Metropolis. He moved back to Paducah around 1997, but remains at Linwood Motors, where he will have been employed for 31 years this December.

When Mackey is away from work, most likely he can be found racing motorcycles, something he has done for over 30 years. As a teen, he rode on dirt bikes and some Hondas. When he started drag racing motorcycles, Mackey jokes, “I had black hair.”

According to Mackey, he never did get into racing cars. He has stuck to the motorcycles. “It’s just always been my thing. It’s kept me out of trouble. Kept me off the streets. Kept me broke,” says Mackey.

He was around the age of 20 when he began drag racing bikes. He rode on some Hondas, but, “They just couldn’t do what I wanted them to do on the track.” He became a Kawasaki man and has stuck to that brand name and has his own Kawasaki “top gas” motorcycle. “Kawasaki, let the good time roll,” he says.

Mackey does roll - the wheels on his bike roll fast down drag strips and the wheels on his trailer and truck roll all across the U.S. traveling to various race tracks, most all which are officially sanctioned motorcycle drag racing competitions.

He has raced everywhere from West Frankfort to Rockingham, N.C., Sikeston, Mo. to Gainsville Fla. and last fall down south to Valdosta, Ga. He has won a lot of races, including the Screaming Eagle Racing competition and the drag bike races in Nashville, Tenn.

He explains that his crew - made up of Calvin Blanden, also known as “Mr. B.,” the wrench man and “mastermind,” and Nicky Broady, his crew chief, typically head out on a Thursday afternoon with the trailer loaded with two bikes, Mackey’s top gas bike and Mr. B’s Pro Mod Kawasaki, which is an even faster bike than his top gas bike.
