On paper it looked like somewhat of a mismatch, and on the turf, it turned out to be a little worse than that.

Herrin used a trio of talented running backs and a big, bruising front line to run up a first half lead of 50-13 and dispel any doubts about the outcome of Massac’s Homecoming game on Friday.

Brent Milner, Chase Merrill and Chris Butler combined for somewhere around 400 rushing yards and all nine of Herrin’s touchdowns. Milner notched five himself with Merrill scoring three times and Butler getting in on the act once.

Massac head coach John Warren commented after the game: “That’s a well-oiled machine there!”

Indeed, a strong offensive line, a stable of strong, speedy backs, an adequate quarterback and a strong kicking game makes Herrin go.

After dropping games to Waterloo and Carbondale, Herrin seems to be peaking at about the right time with their fourth win in a row.

As for the Patriots, it’s gut-check time. Playing this game without standout tailback Dillon Stoner and faced now with the reality of playing the remainder of the schedule without quarterback Braden Fritch, who suffered a shoulder injury in Friday’s Herrin game, the Pats must decide now whether to battle on or fold the tents.

For all the ugliness of the final score, 64-13, the game was not without its moments for Massac.
