Melvin Rushing, 91, of Metropolis, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Lourdes hospital in Paducah.

Mr. Rushing was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II in Saipan and Okinawa, Japan.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Metropolis and worked as a construction carpenter through Metropolis Local 640.

Survivors include his wife, Odessa; one daughter, Janice McDuffee and husband Stanley of Metropolis; two grandsons, Michael McDuffee and wife Stephanie of Grand Chain and Philip McDuffee of Sydney, Australia; two great-grandchildren, Ashton and Destiny McDuffee; two stepgrandchildren, Jessica and Kyndra Calvin of Grand Chain; and one sister, Martha Staulcup of Pontiac.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Odia and Ella Flincher Rushing; three sisters; and six brothers.

Graveside service was held Thursday at Metropolis Memorial Gardens with Bro. Brian Anderson officiating. Military graveside rites were conducted by the American Legion.

Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home of Metropolis was in charge of arrangements.
