Melvin Souders, 89, of Metropolis, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2012 at Metropolis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis.

Born Nov. 25, 1922, Mr. Souders was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II in the Asiatic and Pacific Theater, where he received ribbons and medals for the liberation of the Philippines, and victory in the South Pacific. Mr. Souders was a member of the American Legion and First Christian Church of Brookport.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Suttles and husband Robert of Brookport; four grandchildren, Robin Woods and husband Bill, Scott Suttles and wife Christy, David D. Craig and wife Janet and Heather Pegram and husband Shane; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Barnes of Brookport; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward C. and Blanche E. Brown Souders; his first wife, Louise Souders; his second wife, Virginia Souders; one daughter, Melva Lou Craig; four sisters, Margaret A. O’Brien, Stella O. Elam, Mary B. Castleman and Dorothea E. Jackson; and four brothers, William B. Souders, Edward E. Souders, Oron C. Souders and Joseph G. Souders.

Funeral service was held Monday at Brookport Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Call officiating.

Burial followed at the Pell Cemetery near Brookport. Pallbearers were Mike Souders, Pat Souders, Bill Ed Souders, Mark Souders, Tom Souders, Scott Suttles and David D. Craig.
