With Memorial Day fast approaching, various activities throughout the Metropolis Planet area are being planned in observance of the holiday.
The Mound City National Cemetery is hosting its annual Memorial Day program at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
This annual event honors all veterans for their dedication, their service and their sacrifices.
The program will begin with the call to order.
Presentation of Colors and the Solemn March into the cemetery will consist of Veterans groups, such as VFWs, Amvets, American Legions, Sons of Union Veterans, Sons of the Confederacy and the Ladies Auxiliaries.
The program will include a guest speaker, a roll call of the reading of the names honoring the deceased veterans from past wars, the laying of the wreaths and the rifle and cannon salute.
The program will conclude with the cannon salute and the playing of Taps.
A shuttle service will run from St. Mary’s Church in Mound City to the cemetery, beginning at 9 a.m. and the last pickup at 9:45 a.m.

American Legion, Amvets, Sons of the American Legion and VFW members in Metropolis will place flags on veterans’ graves in Metropolis on Saturday.
“Due to the fact that we are losing more and more veterans every year and are putting out close to 2000 flags, we are asking for volunteers to help,” explained Peggy Mitchell, American Legion Post 306 spokesperson. “Anyone wanting to help needs to be at the American Legion Hall, located at 321 Market St. in Metropolis, at 7 a.m. on Saturday.”
A catered breakfast will be served at 7 a.m. for those helping, with individuals going out to local cemeteries following the breakfast.
The Metropolis Boy Scouts will assist the veterans by picking up the flags at area cemeteries on Monday afternoon.

Memorial Day services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 26 at Memorial Park in Metropolis next to the public library, sponsored by the Amvets, American Legion, Sons of the American Legion and VFW.
The posting of colors, invitation to veterans and opening prayer will be presented.
Guest speaker will be Rev. Terry Mathis. The National Anthem will be performed by Donna Libby.
Taps will be performed, and a 21-gun salute will be featured.
Everyone is encouraged to come honor those who served.
Antioch Baptist Church in Rosebud will host its annual Cemetery Day Service Sunday. Worship service begins at 10:30 a.m., with the potluck meal and afternoon cemetery business meeting to follow. Everyone is invited to attend.
This year marks the 150th year celebration of Antioch Baptist Church.
The church was organized on May 28, 1864 in the Normal School House. In 1890, the church moved to construct a new church house at a cost of $511.14. That building still houses the current congregation.
A celebration of the 150-year anniversary of the church will be held at a later date. Bro. Kevin Richerson is the pastor.

The annual Memorial Day Service at Anderson Congregational Church in the Boaz community will be held on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Regular morning services will be held followed by a potluck dinner in the fellowship hall during the noon time frame.
A special afternoon service will be held to honor all veterans.
This will include a roll call of the 99 veterans known to be buried in the Anderson Cemetery. No evening services will be held.
Everyone is invited.
The 100th Memorial Day service at Temple Hill Church and Cemetery will be held Sunday, with worship service at 10 a.m. and recognition of military veterans being held at 11:15 a.m.
A community potluck meal will be served, followed by a special musical concert by Eric Horner of Paducah.

Otterbein Cemetery’s annual Memorial Day gathering will be held Sunday, beginning at noon with a potluck luncheon.
The cemetery is located in Pope County.
