The highly anticipated match-up between the Massac County Patriots and Class A power Meridian had its moments but didn’t quite live up to expectations.
Meridian used some outside firepower early on to keep Massac’s defense honest, with the Bobcats David Davis firing from all over, and gain a 25-19 first quarter lead.
That racehorse pace, along with Meridian’s athletes, was the undoing of Massac in a fateful second quarter. Barely into the second frame, Dalton Mitchell canned a couple of free tosses, and Massac was within five at 27-22, but Meridian put together a 14-0 run and coasted to halftime with a 46-26 lead.
Massac failed to trim the halftime deficit in the third quarter and entered the final eight minutes trailing by 21.
