Mildred L. Gurley, 77, of rural Vienna, died Sunday, May 20, 2012, at her home.

Born April 9, 1935 at the Carlton family farm near Vienna, Mrs. Gurley had been employed as a cook at the former Bob White Café. She also cooked at the Johnson County Head Start and Vienna High School.

She later was the “biscuit and gravy” lady at the Druther’s Restaurant in Metropolis. Mildred had also been employed by Florsheim Shoe Co. in Anna.

Mrs. Gurley was a member of New Hope Baptist Church near New Columbia. She was a former member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church near Buncombe and later the First Baptist Church of Vienna.

Survivors include four daughters, Lois Ann Inman and husband Jimmie and Marilyn Ditterline and husband Phillip, all of the Reevesville community, Vicky Yates and husband George of Vienna and Sonia Grantham and husband Derek of La Center, Ky.; two sons, Danny Gurley and wife Connie of Vienna and John “Ernie” Gurley and wife Paula of Goreville; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-randchildren; one sister, Velma Newton and husband Clifford “Top” of Vienna; one brother, A.G. Carlton of Mineral Springs, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, John L. Gurley: her parents, Everett L. and Della Mae Green Carlton; one grandson, Joshua Jesse Gurley; one great-granddaughter, Mileigh Ann Ballard-Gurley; one brother, Wayne Carlton; and three sisters, Lucille Clymore, Geraldine Doyle and Mary Lillian Carlton.

Funeral service was held Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church near New Columbia with Pastor Frank Forthman officiating. Burial followed at Berea Cemetery, southwest of Vienna.
