Nashville’s powerful Hornettes took down the unbeaten Lady Patriots 5-2 to take the sectional championship.
Nashville’s Maci Ingram outdueled Massac’s Kaylee Childers in a matchup of two of the best pitchers around here. One could almost see this coming after the grueling 10-inning, 1-0 win over an under-rated Red Bud team.
Massac’s potent offense just couldn’t get untracked against Ingram. A controversial call in the first inning seemed to give Nashville some extra energy as a call by the base umpire at third was overturned by the home plate ump, costing Nashville an out and “a runner at third with one away” opportunity.
Massac responded well though taking the lead at 1-0 in the top of the second.
Lakken Jones continued her hot hitting with a booming double to center field scoring Jordyn Smith who had beat out a slow roller to deep short.
The lead evaporated though when Hannah Yung led off the second with a majestic homer to center. A whole slew of infield hits followed, three, that put Childers in a tight spot. Childers escaped with just one run allowed to trail 2-1.
