According to Nina Krauss, spokesperson for Honeywell, in the summer of 2009, Honeywell was awarded a $27.3 million grant to become the first U.S. producer of LiPF6. LiPF6 is a conductive salt that is one of four core components used in all lithium-ion batteries.
"With the grant funding, we have built a pilot plant to produce LiPF6 at one of our research and development facilities to demonstrate the technical and commercial viability of our novel manufacturing process," said Krauss.
That pilot plant, Krauss said is in Buffalo, N.Y. and a second plant is being considered for Massac County.
