The curtain came down Saturday on the Massac County Patriots golf team at Salem Country Club.

After winning their ninth straight Class AA regional tournament, held Tuesday at the Links at Kokopelli in Marion, the Patriots finished three strokes shy of moving on to state tournament action. Centralia won the sectional with a team score of 311, Springfield High took second with 317 and Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin was third, and last to move on, with 320.

Massac shot 323 in their last competition of the year. Massac also had no one make the cut-off score of 76, so no individuals from Massac are still playing.

Just days removed from shooting identical 70s in regional tournament action, Massac’s Burnham brothers, Zach and Brock, suffered “off days” at Salem with, once again identical, 79s.

Coach Gary Adkins noted the significance of their scores: “We had the wrong people have a bad day! There are some people we can overcome having a bad day and there are some we can’t.”

Jon Duley was on his way to a really nice round only to stumble on the last three holes and finish with a still respectable 81. Kyler Owens turned in an 84 to complete the Massac card.

“Those last three holes really hurt us, but everyone had to play them,” Adkins said.

In regional tournament action, the Burnham brothers added a bit of sibling drama in leading their team to the title.

After finishing with twin 70s, the brothers engaged in a playoff that took four holes to settle with younger brother Brock emerging victorious. It was Brock’s first high school tournament win.

On the tough, links style layout at Kokopelli, the brothers turned in a pair of first rate performances, especially considering how the wind picked up late in the round.

Adkins had high praise for their play: “The Burnham boys played phenomenal golf today.”
