Friday night’s win Herrin was a nip-and-tuck affair that saw Herrin jump out to an 11-4 lead before Massac settled down and began whittling away at the lead.
Massac outscored Herrin 11-6 to end the quarter and trailed 18-15 at the first horn. Andy Walquist followed his own miss for a bucket to open the second quarter, and when Dalton Mitchell picked off a Herrin entry pass and fed a streaking Davontay Blye for an easy layup, Massac had their first lead of the game.
Near the end of the first half, Massac’s big men misfired on a series of free throws allowing a desperation 50-footer by Herrin’s Josh Haynes to cut the margin to 28-27 at the half time horn.
Massac eased out to an eventual seven-point lead at 48-41 at the half way mark of the final frame before Herrin closed the gap to 52-49 with just over one minute left.
