At the Monday, March 25 Joppa-Maple Grove school board meeting, after returning to open session, the board accepted the resignation of Superintendent Steve Ptacek, who will be leaving the district early to take another position at Jacksonville School District 117.

Ptacek’s last day was Friday, March 29 and he took earned vacation over the spring break. Due to the early departure, the board also approved a motion naming Bill Biggerstaff as interim Superintendent. Biggerstaff will assume that position on Monday, April 8.

According to Ptacek, the shift in administration has created a position for Dean of Students, which will be posted internally.

Before starting the board’s agenda, Ptacek took a moment to point out with the upcoming school board election, it would likely be board chairman Clarence Russell’s last meeting, as he did not seek re-election to the board. Ptacek presented Russell a plaque from the school district for his 13 years of service on the school board.

During the principal’s report, Principal Bill Biggerstaff reported enrollment at Maple Grove elementary at this time is 167 and last year at the same time, the enrollment was 155, so there are more students.

He went on to report the Illinois State Achievement Testing (ISAT) was completed the week of March 4-8. He also noted on March 15, there was a Spring Fling, in which 284 people were in attendance and said that it went very well.

At Joppa High School, Biggerstaff said attendance is 107, whereas last year there were 111, so the school is down 4 students.

In Ptacek report to the board, he went over financial details, referring to a spreadsheet of calculations he has been using to compare from year to year. In the area of expenditures, he said the district is right on track.

Ptacek also noted that on average it appears the district is taking a drop of about $103,000 per month.
