Three homes in Metropolis will receive work from several community volunteers on Saturday during the 18th annual Rebuilding Together workday.

Volunteer teams from area businesses, organizations and churches will begin the workday at 8 a.m. at Randy Rushing’s building located in 800 block of West 10th Street, across the side street from Metropolis Community Center, where they will receive their assignments and head out to begin the work.

Those homes scheduled to receive repairs include:

• Chris and Jane Atkinson, 604 W. 11th St. — Hopkins Construction

• Stelza Bowman, 207 Butler St. — LaFarge

• Linda Landers, 124 Linsey Ave. — Harrah’s Casino and Hotel

Volunteers are encouraged to bring rakes, mops, buckets, shovels, wheelbarrows, small ladders and more to aid in the work throughout the day.

Metropolis’ Liberty Utility will provide lunch at the work sites for the volunteers.

Rebuilding Together Metropolis is a not-for-profit organization that rehabilitates the houses of low-income homeowners, in particular those individuals who are elderly or have disabilities. The rehabilitation program enables those individuals to continue to live in warmth, safety and independence.

Nationally, the organization was founded in 1988 and is the largest volunteer home repair initiative in America. The Metropolis affiliate was founded in 1997, with four homeowners receiving improvements.

In its 17th year history, the program has completed approximately 148 projects, many of which have rehabilitated homes.

Dailey encourages anyone who may be willing to donate some time to call her at 524-5627 or show up at the meeting, where she and other Rebuilding Together organizers will assign volunteers a home to work at.

“There will be plenty of jobs for volunteers to do,” she said.
