Samuel L. Smith, 86, of Edwardsville, formerly of Metropolis, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Edwardsville with Rev. Steve Disney officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Glen Carbon.

Born June 17, 1927 in Carbondale, Mr. Smith was the former editor and part owner of the Metropolis News newspaper from the late 1950s until the early 1970s. He left Metropolis to become the assistant director of the University News Services at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville; within two years, he was named director.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Edwardsville and was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Louise Beltz Smith of Edwardsville; two daughters, Sharon Smith of Metropolis and Susan Cornwell of Washington, D.C.; three sons, Stephen Smith of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Daniel Smith of Glendale, Ariz., and Michael Smith of Akron, Ohio; one brother, Stephen J. Smith of Dallas, Texas; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lindley and Grace Selby Smith; and eight siblings.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Sunset Hill Funeral Home in Glen Carbon.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Edwardsville or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
