Sherman H. Finke, 80, of Crawfordsville, Ark., formerly of Metropolis, passed away at 5:08 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2013, at his residence.

Sherman was the owner operator of Sherman H. Finke Co., a contract-drilling firm that operated in the Illinois Basin and Rocky Mountain states of Wyoming, Montana, Colorado and New Mexico, and a mining equipment distributor for Nagaoka, Inc. of Osaka, Japan.

He and his son, Douglas, are co-owners of a farm in Massac County.

Sherman applied for and received an appointment from U.S. Sen. Everett Dirksen of Illinois to attend the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. but declined the offer to pursue other interests.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving in Europe with U.S. Army Combat Corp of Engineers.

Sherman was a licensed pilot. Flying and helping others were his greatest pleasures.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Metropolis and had been a former member.

Survivors include one son, Douglas (Debbie) and grandson, Eric of West Memphis, Ark.; one brother, Leonard (Pearl) Finke of Paducah; four nephews; and one niece.

He is preceded in death by his parents, August and Marie Foss Finke.

Funeral service was held Sunday at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Metropolis with Rev. David Deem officiating.

Burial followed at St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were David Finke, John Finke, Daniel Finke, Glenn Finke, Mike Little and Gary Yewell. Honorary pallbearers were Jim Foss and Jimmy Jones.

Miller Funeral Home of Metropolis was in charge of arrangements.
