The image said it all.

When senior sparkplug Madison Stephens pulled up 10 feet short of first base for the last out of the sectional finals with her head in her hands and her shoulders shaking violently, you knew then and there that Massac County’s improbable run at the IHSA Class AA State title was over.

You can’t run with a broken heart.

Stephens had plenty of company on the Perry County Fairgrounds last Wednesday. In another great game, DuQuoin came from behind in the sixth inning to snatch victory from a gallant Lady Patriot team by a score of 5-4.
